- Rate applied: From 1 April 2026 (Ley 2/2026)
Official source: Catalan Tax Agency (ATC) — tax rates. Llei 5/2017 (IEET), amended by Ley 2/2026 of 6 March (DOGC 9621), in force since 1 April 2026.
Today only Barcelona city applies a municipal surcharge (€4.00 through March 2026; €5.00 from 1 April 2026, rising €1/year to €8 by 2029). Other municipalities may adopt their own surcharge, chargeable only from 1 October 2026; we default it to €0. Confirm the figure with your town hall.

How to calculate the tourist tax step by step
- 1
Choose the autonomous community
Only Catalonia and the Balearic Islands charge a regional tourist tax. The rest of Spain has no general regional levy.
- 2
Set the municipality or season
In Catalonia, Barcelona city has its own rate and surcharge. In the Balearics, the check-in date sets high or low season.
- 3
Select the accommodation type
The rate depends on the category: tourist-use dwelling, hotel by stars, hostal, hostel and so on.
- 4
Enter nights, adults and children ages
Exempt minors (16 or under in Catalonia, 15 or under in the Balearics) do not count.
- 5
Read the total
The calculator applies the regional rate, the municipal surcharge, exemptions and per-stay caps, and shows the per-night amount and the total.
Collect the right tax automatically at check-in
Working out the tax by hand for every arrival — two layers in Catalonia, seasons in the Balearics, exempt minors and per-stay caps — invites mistakes. Undercharge and it comes out of your margin; overcharge and you invite complaints.
BookCheckin calculates the tax due on each booking and collects it during online check-in. The amount is stored with the reservation, ready for you to self-assess to the ATC (form 950) or ATIB (form 700). We do not remit the tax for you: you file it as the obligated party.
Tourist tax FAQ
- Which autonomous communities charge a tourist tax in Spain in 2026?
- Only two: Catalonia, with the Tax on Stays in Tourist Establishments (IEET) plus a Barcelona municipal surcharge; and the Balearic Islands, with the Tax on Tourist Stays (ITS or ecotax). No other community currently levies a general regional tourist tax.
- How much is the tourist tax in Barcelona in 2026?
- From 1 April 2026, under Ley 2/2026, a tourist-use dwelling in Barcelona pays €9.50 per person per night: €4.50 regional rate (IEET) plus €5.00 municipal surcharge. Before that date it was €6.25 (2.25 + 4.00). Guests aged 16 or under are exempt and only the first 7 nights per stay are charged.
- Do children pay the tourist tax?
- No, with different thresholds. In Catalonia, guests aged 16 or under are exempt. In the Balearics, those under 16 (15 or under). The exemption applies directly once the guest’s age is captured at registration.
- What is the maximum number of nights charged?
- In Catalonia, a maximum of 7 nights per stay: from the eighth night neither the IEET nor the surcharge accrues. The Balearics have no cap, but from the 9th continuous night the amount is reduced by 50%.
- How much is the Balearic ecotax?
- From €1 to €4 per person per night in high season (1 May to 31 October) by category; a holiday rental (ETV) pays €2.00. Low-season rates are lower (€0.50 for an ETV). A 50% reduction applies from the 9th night and under-16s are exempt.
- Did the Catalonia tourist tax change in 2026?
- Yes. Ley 2/2026 of 6 March, in force since 1 April 2026, raised every IEET rate and the Barcelona municipal surcharge (from €4 to €5 per night, rising €1/year to €8 by 2029). This calculator applies the correct rate for the check-in date.
- Does BookCheckin remit the tourist tax for me?
- No. BookCheckin calculates and collects the right tax from the guest during online check-in and stores it with the booking. You file the self-assessment with the Catalan Tax Agency (form 950) or the Balearic Tax Agency (form 700) as the obligated party.
- Is this calculator tax advice?
- No. It is an educational tool with rates verified against the official ATC and ATIB sources in July 2026. Rates and seasons can change by annual order — always confirm the current amount with the relevant authority before charging.
